Depression and pain: primary data and meta-analysis among 237 952 people across 47 low- and middle-income countries
2017
BackgroundDepression and pain are leading causes of global disability. However, there is a paucity of multinational population data assessing the association between depression and pain, particularly among low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where both are common. Therefore, we investigated this association across 47 LMICs.MethodsCommunity-based data on 273 952 individuals from 47 LMICs were analysed. Multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision depression/depression subtypes (over the past 12 months) and pain in the previous 30 days based on self-reported data. Country…
Predictors of suicidal ideation in depressive primary care patients.
2009
Suicidal ideation is common in patients suffering from depression, but it often remains undetected. General practitioners play an important role in the management of depression and suicidality. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for suicidal ideation in patients with major depression in primary health care.We conducted a cross-sectional study. Patients were recruited from 74 primary care practices in Germany. Data was collected between April 2005 and July 2006. We calculated a binary logistic regression model to evaluate whether depression severity (Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ-9), physical pain (SF-36 Physical Pain Scale), physical comorbidity, intake of antidepressant m…
Efficacy and safety comparison of two amoxicillin administration schedules after third molar removal. A randomized, double-blind and controlled clini…
2009
Objective: The aim of this comparative double-blind, prospective, randomized, clinical trial was to evaluate two amoxicillin administration patterns. The first was a short prophylactic therapy and the second a long postoperative regimen. Study Design: The study population consisted of 160 patients who underwent mandibular third molar extraction. Patients were randomized into two equal groups. In group 1, 2 grams of amoxicillin were administered 1 hour before the procedure and 1 gram 6 hours after surgery. In group 2, patients received 1 gram of amoxicillin 6 hours after surgery followed by 1 gram every 8 hour for 4 days. All patients received the same number of tablets thanks to the use of …
The Advantages of Type III Scaphoid Nonunion Advanced Collapse (SNAC) Treatment With Partial Carpal Arthrodesis in the Dominant Hand: Results of 5-ye…
2018
Introduction The SNAC wrist (Scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse) is one of the complications following scaphoid fractures treated conservatively and one of the causes of wrist arthritis that the hand surgeon has to face most frequently. In these cases surgical management is usually warranted. Materials and methods In the set time frame of 6 years we treated 15 SNAC wrist cases. On average patients underwent surgery five years after the trauma. All patients were treated via dorsal incision with partial carpal arthrodesis and total scaphoidectomy, associated with denervation of the posterior interosseous nerves. A plaster cast was applied to all patients for 3 weeks postoperatively. In the p…
Does Hybrid Surgery Improve Quality of Life in Multilevel Cervical Degenerative Disk Disease? Five-Year Follow-up Study.
2020
Background: Patient satisfaction is becoming an increasing factor worthy of consideration when evaluating the surgical quality. The correlation between patient satisfaction and surgical outcomes 5 years after cervical hybrid surgery (HS), which incorporates anterior cervical decompression and fusion and cervical disk arthroplasty techniques in multilevel cervical degenerative disk disease, has not been evaluated. Methods: The aim of this study was firstly to analyze prospectively collected data from a sample of patients (n = 50) treated with cervical HS for selected cases of radiculopathy and myelopathy in order to evaluate pain levels of patients, using the Neck and Arm Pain scale as an ex…
Evaluation of Psychometric and Linguistic Properties of the Italian Adolescent Pain Assessment Scales: A Systematic Review
2018
Introduction: Adolescents’ pain experiences are complex and multidimensional, and evaluating pain only from a sensory and affective point of view may be in many instances limiting and inadequate; this is the reason why it is of paramount importance to identify the tools which can better assess the pain experienced by young patients. A person-oriented approach is highly encouraged, as it may better investigate the cognitive and behavioral development typical of this age group. The aim of this review paper is to describe the available tools which are able to adequately assess pain intensity in adolescents, in particular those validated in Italian. Methods: We conducted a systematic review usi…
Ineffectiveness of dextromethorphan in cancer pain
1998
Experimental studies have indicated that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists may be effective analgesics in a wide variety of chronic pain states. The mechanism is presumed to be related to decreased firing of dorsal horn neurons after constant repeated C-fiber stimulation. Dextromethorphan (DM), a potent NMDA antagonist with a good safety profile, may be a promising agent for the treatment of persistent pain. An open-label randomized trial was designed to examine the effects of combining DM with NSAIDs, dextropropoxyphene, or morphine in cancer patients with pain. Patients who required a change in the step of the World Health Organization's (WHO) analgesic ladder because of a …
Tools for identifying cancer pain of predominantly neuropathic origin and opioid responsiveness in cancer patients.
2009
Neuropathic pain (NP) is a difficult issue, particularly in cancer which is a dynamic condition where multiple pain etiologies are concomitantly present. Cancer pain is often labeled as mixed mechanism pain and is not easily classified as exclusively nociceptive or NP. The aim of this study was to explore the value of evaluation tools such as Neuropathic Pain Questionnaire (NPQ), complete and short form (NPQ-SF), Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Signs and Symptoms (LANSS) and Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI). The secondary outcome was to evaluate the response to opioid titration, according to the hierarchical classification of definite, possible and unlikely NP. A consecutive sample…
A Randomised-Controlled Clinical Study Examining the Effect of High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) on the Management of Painful Calcaneal Spur with P…
2021
Calcaneal spur and plantar fasciitis are the most common causes of plantar heel pain. There are many effective physical modalities for treating this musculoskeletal disorder. So far, the are no clear recommendations confirming the clinical utility of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) in the management of painful calcaneal spur with plantar fasciitis. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of HILT in pain management in patients with calcaneal spur and plantar fasciitis. A group of 65 patients was assessed for eligibility based on the CONSORT guidelines. This study was prospectively registered in the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry platform (registration number ACTRN1…
